The Rule: Look at the First Decimal Digit

When rounding a decimal to the nearest whole number, you only need to look at one digit — the first digit after the decimal point (the tenths digit).

This single digit tells you everything: round up or round down.

If first decimal digit ≥ 5 → round UP   |   If first decimal digit < 5 → round DOWN

Worked Example 1 — Round 4.7 to the nearest whole number

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit: 7
Step 2
7 ≥ 5, so we round UP
Step 3
4 + 1 = 5
4.7 rounded to the nearest whole number = 5

Worked Example 2 — Round 8.3 to the nearest whole number

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit: 3
Step 2
3 < 5, so we round DOWN
Step 3
The whole number stays as 8
8.3 rounded to the nearest whole number = 8
Tip: The digit after the decimal point is the ONLY digit you look at when rounding to the nearest whole number.

Tricky Cases and Common Mistakes

Some decimals look tricky but the rule never changes — only the first decimal digit matters. Students often make mistakes by looking at too many digits.

Worked Example 3 — Round 9.95 to the nearest whole number

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit (tenths place): 9
Step 2
9 ≥ 5, so we round UP
Step 3
9 + 1 = 10
Step 4
Answer: 10
9.95 rounded to the nearest whole number = 10

Worked Example 4 — Round 0.499 to the nearest whole number

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit (tenths place): 4
Step 2
4 < 5, so we round DOWN
Step 3
The whole number stays as 0
Step 4
Answer: 0 — Note: the 9s after don’t matter!
0.499 rounded to the nearest whole number = 0

Worked Example 4b — Round 12.501 to the nearest whole number

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit (tenths place) only: 5. Ignore the 01 that comes after it — like with 0.499, only this one digit decides.
Step 2
\(5 \geq 5\), so we round UP
Step 3
The whole number 12 increases by 1: 13
Step 4
Answer: 13
12.501 rounded to the nearest whole number = 13
Common mistake: Looking at more than one decimal digit. For rounding to the nearest whole number, ONLY look at the tenths digit (first after the decimal point).

Rounding is used constantly in everyday situations. Whether you’re estimating a shopping bill, reporting a distance, or recording a temperature, the same rule applies.

Worked Example 5 — A runner completes a race in 28.7 minutes. Round to the nearest minute.

Step 1
Look at the first decimal digit: 7
Step 2
7 ≥ 5, so we round UP
Step 3
28 + 1 = 29 minutes
28.7 minutes rounded to the nearest minute = 29 minutes

Worked Example 6 — A plank of wood is 2.3 metres long. Round to the nearest metre.

Look at the first decimal digit: 3
Step 2
3 < 5, so we round DOWN

The whole number stays as 2 metres
2.3 metres rounded to the nearest metre = 2 metres

⚠ Things to Watch Out For

  • Looking at the wrong digit: To round to the nearest whole number, look at the FIRST decimal digit (tenths). If it's 5 or more, round up. If less than 5, round down.
  • Rounding 9.5 incorrectly: 9.5 rounds UP to 10 — not down to 9. The digit after the rounding position is 5, so always round up.
  • Changing digits before the rounding point: 3.7 rounds to 4, not 40 or 4.0 — only the specified digit changes, everything before stays the same (unless there's a carry).
  • Forgetting the carry: 9.7 rounds to 10, not 9. The carry ripples left — the units digit 9 becomes 10, adding 1 to the tens column.
  • Rounding too many times: Round in ONE step using the original number. Rounding 3.45 to the nearest whole: look at .4 → round down to 3. Do NOT first round to 3.5 then up to 4.
