What a Pie Chart Shows — Proportions and Angles

A pie chart is a circle divided into sectors. Each sector represents a category. The size of each sector (its angle) shows the proportion of the total that category represents. A full circle = 360°, so each sector's angle is calculated as:

\[\text{Sector angle} = \frac{\text{frequency}}{\text{total}} \times 360°\]

Example 1 — Calculate sector angles for transport data

40 people surveyed. Car: 18, Bus: 10, Walk: 8, Cycle: 4.

Step 1
Check total: \(18 + 10 + 8 + 4 = 40\). ✓
Step 2
Car: \(\frac{18}{40} \times 360 = 162°\)
Step 3
Bus: \(\frac{10}{40} \times 360 = 90°\)
Step 4
Walk: \(\frac{8}{40} \times 360 = 72°\)  Cycle: \(\frac{4}{40} \times 360 = 36°\)
Step 5
Check: \(162 + 90 + 72 + 36 = 360°\) ✓ Angles must always add up to 360°.

Example 2 — What does 25% look like on a pie chart?

Step 1
25% of the whole = \(\frac{25}{100} \times 360 = 90°\). So a 25% sector has an angle of 90°.
Step 2
This is exactly one quarter of the circle (\(\frac{1}{4} \times 360 = 90°\)).
Step 3
Useful check: a half = 180°, a quarter = 90°, a third ≈ 120°.
Key point: Pie charts show PROPORTIONS, not exact amounts. Two pie charts with the same sector sizes could represent very different totals. Always note the total \(n\) when interpreting a pie chart.

Drawing Pie Charts — Calculate, Then Draw

To draw a pie chart: first calculate each sector angle using the formula. Then draw a circle, draw a radius, and use a protractor to measure each angle in turn — always measuring from the last line drawn. Label each sector or add a key.

Example 1 — Draw a pie chart for favourite drinks (40 people)

Tea: 10, Coffee: 20, Water: 6, Juice: 4. Total = 40.

Step 1
Calculate angles: Tea = \(\frac{10}{40} \times 360 = 90°\)   Coffee = \(\frac{20}{40} \times 360 = 180°\)   Water = \(\frac{6}{40} \times 360 = 54°\)   Juice = \(\frac{4}{40} \times 360 = 36°\)
Step 2
Check: \(90 + 180 + 54 + 36 = 360°\) ✓
Step 3
Draw a circle with a radius pointing to 3 o'clock (East). Use a protractor at the centre to measure 90° for Tea. Draw the new radius.
Step 4
From the Tea line, measure 180° for Coffee. Continue around for Water (54°) and Juice (36°). Label each sector or add a colour key.

Example 2 — Checking calculations (rounding to nearest degree)

Sometimes angles don't come out as whole numbers. Round to the nearest degree, then adjust the last sector to make total = 360°.

Step 1
Data: 30 people. A: 11, B: 9, C: 10. Angles: A = \(\frac{11}{30} \times 360 = 132°\)   B = \(\frac{9}{30} \times 360 = 108°\)   C = \(\frac{10}{30} \times 360 = 120°\)
Step 2
Check: \(132 + 108 + 120 = 360°\) ✓ These work out perfectly here.
Step 3
If angles don't sum to 360° due to rounding, adjust the largest sector by ±1° to compensate.
Common mistake: Measuring the next angle from the original start line each time, rather than from the last drawn line. Always measure each new sector FROM THE PREVIOUS LINE.

Reading and Interpreting Pie Charts

To interpret a pie chart, convert sector angles to fractions or percentages of the whole. If you know the total, you can find the actual number in any sector. The key formulas are:

Example 1 — Interpreting the budget pie chart

Budget pie chart (total £2400): Rent 144°, Food 90°, Transport 72°, Other 54°.

Step 1
What fraction is spent on food? \(\frac{90}{360} = \frac{1}{4}\). One quarter of the budget is spent on food.
Step 2
What percentage is rent? \(\frac{144}{360} \times 100 = 40\%\).
Step 3
How much money is spent on transport? \(\frac{72}{360} \times 2400 = 0.2 \times 2400 = £480\).

Example 2 — Finding numbers from a pie chart when given the total

A survey of 80 people. A pie chart shows "Science" has a sector of 45°. How many people chose Science?

Step 1
Convert angle to fraction: \(\frac{45}{360} = \frac{1}{8}\).
Step 2
Multiply by total: \(\frac{1}{8} \times 80 = 10\) people chose Science.
Step 3
Check: \(10 \div 80 = 0.125 = 12.5\%\) and \(0.125 \times 360 = 45°\) ✓.
Real-life context: When comparing two pie charts, look at proportions, not sizes. A "Maths" sector of 90° means one quarter of each group chose Maths — even if one survey had 100 people and the other had 1000.
