Adding Decimals — Align the Decimal Point
Rule: Line up the decimal points, pad with zeros, then add column by column

The golden rule for adding decimals is to align the decimal points in a column. Then pad shorter numbers with zeros so every row has the same number of decimal places. Finally add from right to left, carrying as with whole numbers.

Example 1 — Calculate \(3.47 + 12.6\)

Step 1
Write in columns with decimal points aligned. Pad 12.6 as 12.60.
Step 2
Hundredths: \(7 + 0 = 7\). Tenths: \(4 + 6 = 10\) — write 0, carry 1.
Step 3
Units: \(3 + 2 + 1 = 6\). Tens: \(0 + 1 = 1\).
Step 4
Answer: \(\mathbf{16.07}\)

Example 2 — Calculate \(0.8 + 2.35 + 1.4\)

Step 1
Pad to 2 d.p.: \(0.80 + 2.35 + 1.40\). Align decimal points.
Step 2
Hundredths: \(0 + 5 + 0 = 5\).
Step 3
Tenths: \(8 + 3 + 4 = 15\) — write 5, carry 1.
Step 4
Units: \(0 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 4\). Answer: \(\mathbf{4.55}\)
Common mistake: Not aligning decimal points. Always write the decimal point in the same column for every number, then pad shorter numbers with zeros.

Subtracting Decimals — Column Method with Borrowing

Subtracting decimals uses the same column approach. Align the decimal points, pad with zeros, then subtract from right to left — borrowing (exchanging) when a digit on top is smaller than the one below.

Example 3 — Calculate \(10.00 - 3.47\)

Step 1
Set up in columns: 10.00 on top, 03.47 below. Decimal points aligned.
Step 2
Hundredths: \(0 - 7\) — can't do it. Borrow from tenths. Tenths is 0, so borrow from units. Units is 0, so borrow from tens. Chain borrow: tens becomes 0, units becomes 9, tenths becomes 9, hundredths becomes 10.
Step 3
Hundredths: \(10 - 7 = 3\). Tenths: \(9 - 4 = 5\). Units: \(9 - 3 = 6\). Tens: \(0 - 0 = 0\).
Step 4
Answer: \(\mathbf{6.53}\)

Example 4 — Calculate \(5.2 - 1.68\)

Step 1
Pad: \(5.20 - 1.68\).
Step 2
Hundredths: \(0 - 8\) — borrow. \(10 - 8 = 2\). Tenths becomes 1.
Step 3
Tenths: \(1 - 6\) — borrow. \(11 - 6 = 5\). Units becomes 4.
Step 4
Units: \(4 - 1 = 3\). Answer: \(\mathbf{3.52}\)

Example 5 — Shopping total and change

Step 1
Items cost £1.20, £0.89, £1.45, £2.30. Align decimal points and add in columns.
Step 2
Hundredths: \(0+9+5+0=14\) → write 4 carry 1; Tenths: \(2+8+4+3+1=18\) → write 8 carry 1; Units: \(1+0+1+2+1=5\).
Step 3
Total = £5.84. Change from £10.00: \(10.00 - 5.84 = \mathbf{£4.16}\)

Example 6 — Tracking a bank balance

Step 1
Start: £120.00. Debit £23.47: \(120.00 - 23.47 = £96.53\)
Step 2
Credit wages £850.00: \(96.53 + 850.00 = £946.53\)
Step 3
Debit rent £475.00: \(946.53 - 475.00 = \mathbf{£471.53}\)

⚠ Things to Watch Out For

  • Not aligning the decimal points: Always write numbers with decimal points directly below each other. This is the single most common error — misalignment means wrong column values.
  • Not padding with zeros: 12.6 + 3.47 — write 12.60 + 3.47 so both have the same number of decimal places. This prevents misreading the hundredths column.
  • Moving the decimal point: The decimal point stays in the same column throughout the calculation. It does not move.
  • Subtraction from zero: 10.00 − 3.47: you must borrow through the zeros. Work carefully column by column — don't subtract 0 from 4 and write 4.
  • Dropping the decimal in the answer: Always include the decimal point in the answer, aligned exactly with the decimal points in the calculation.
